On this special day you will experience how chores were completed by the entire family in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. This day is based on the book Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is recommended (not required) that you read the book prior to the event.
  • Students will learn how to do farm chores including laundry, plowing and planting a field, feeding the chickens, and milking Buttermilk the Cow (our mechanical milking machine).
  • Visit the Blacksmith and learn how he turns metal into useful products.
  • Meet the farm animals: pigs, goats, sheep, ducks, Poncho the donkey and more!
  • Explore the Schoolhouse.

Homeschool Field Trips

Make history come alive with a Heritage Farmstead Museum guided tour. Programs focus on life on the Blackland Prairie from 1891-1936.

Your students will experience life on the Blackland Prairie with authentic activities which could include farm chores such as planting and plowing, clothes washing, or feeding the chickens.  Students connect agriculture with technology to gain a better understanding of how Texans have adapted to their environment over time.

Tours last 90 minutes and allow for hands-on exploration with trained docents or staff. Parent chaperones are essential to help guide students through stations.

$10 per student (30 student minimum to schedule)
$5 per parent
Wagon rides can be added for an additional $2 per student

Advanced registration is required, and payment must be received prior to your visit.
