We are always looking for enthusiastic and dedicated friends to join our volunteer team! Connect your skills and passion for history, education, farm life, nature or the outdoors to a rewarding role at the museum. We can’t wait to meet you! We have seasonal opportunities and ongoing. Ongoing/Year-Round Volunteer Opportunities
Open to applicants or service organizations willing to volunteer their time for 6 months or longer.
All volunteers (18 years and older) for year-round opportunities must complete the following application steps before volunteering at the museum:

- Background check with Sterling Volunteers
- Meet and Greet with HFM’s Volunteer Coordinator
- Volunteer Orientation
- Volunteer Shadow Day
Volunteers 12-16 years old must have an adult volunteer at the same time and in the same position. The adult volunteering with the child must complete the application steps mentioned above before he/she and his/her child can volunteer at the museum.
Anyone under 12 years old is unable to volunteer.
Sterling Volunteers conducts all background checks. A $5 fee is required to submit your background check (you will receive a copy as well). Our volunteer coordinator will assist you with this approval process.
Docents:
Docents are tour guides, helpers, educators, and a vital part of the Museum! Docents undergo training on local Plano history, turn-of-the-century Texas history, farm and family life. Guides must enjoy being around people, teaching history, and enjoy the outdoors.
Docents give guided public tours of the Farrell-Wilson house from 10am-12pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Grounds Guides:
Grounds Guides answer questions from our guests as they walk around the property. Grounds Guides volunteer for two-hour shifts (10am-12pm and 12pm-2pm) on Thursdays-Saturdays.
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the world and to assist a vital growing organization.
Visitor Center Host:
The Host greets guests in the Visitor Center, answers questions about the museum, sells admission tickets and sells merchandise. Hosts are needed Thursday-Saturday from 10am-12pm and/or 12pm-2pm.
Education Docents:
Education Docents assist with our youth school programs and field trips. Tours are typically held Tuesday-Friday mornings, 10am-11:45am. Tours are held during the school year (August-May). Guides must enjoy being around children, teaching history and enjoy the outdoors. Please visit our Education Programs page for more information about the activities of these programs.
Compost Assistant:
A volunteer is needed 1 hour, once a week to maintain compost area. Our schedule is flexible, so you can choose what works best for you.
Special Event Volunteer Opportunities
Open to corporate businesses, college organizations, high school service clubs, community service organizations, athletic teams, etc.
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with our special events, such as Lights on the Farm, Spring Festival, Little Farmer Fridays, Homeschool Days and Friends of the Farmstead. Volunteers 12-16 years old must have an adult assist them at the same time and in the same position for our special events. We are unable to accept volunteers who are under 12 years old.
