The HERITAGE FARMSTEAD MUSEUM is pleased to offer education programs and guided tours for school field trips, focusing on agricultural history during the period of 1891-1936.

Tours typically start at 10am and last approximately 90 minutes.  Our tours are typically docent-led, to allow students to maximize their learning and have the opportunity to ask questions of a trained volunteer or staff member.  Teachers and parent chaperones are essential to support this experience.

We ask for 30 students minimum in order to schedule a field trip.  If you have a smaller group but would like to come see us, please reach out!  Our goal is to work with every educator so that they may share the Farmstead with their students.

Advanced registration is required, and payment must be received prior to your visit.  Email education@heritagefarmstead.org  or call 972-881-0140 to schedule your visit today!  We are happy to work with parents and educators to customize their group’s experience.

Fees:

  • $10 per Student
  • $5 per Chaperone
  • 1 teacher per every 30 students free
  • Wagon rides can be added for an additional $2 per student

Farmer Duck

Preschool-Grade 2

The Farmer Duck Tour at the Heritage Farmstead Museum is based on the classic children’s story, “Farmer Duck,” by Martin Waddell.  Stations include a story-time reading of the book, as well as a series of engaging farm chores and visits to our livestock exhibits throughout our 4.5 acre farm.

Blackland Prairie Tour

Grades 3-6

The Blackland Prairie Tour supports curriculum particularly in the areas of Science and Social Studies. This tour features several stations throughout our 4.5 acre historic site. Students experience life on the Blackland Prairie with a series of authentic activities which could include farm chores, such as planting and plowing, clothes washing, or feeding the chickens. Students connect agriculture with technology to gain a better understanding of how Texans have adapted to their environment over time.

Additional Field Trip Experiences

We offer a range of options and are happy to offer customized experiences such as beeswax candle rolling or leather stamping as part of a school tour.  Additional fees apply.

Please email education@heritagefarmstead.org to customize your students’ experience today!
