Volunteer Opportunities

The Heritage Farmstead Museum, a four-acre historic site consisting of a restored, 14-room 1891 Victorian farmhouse with its original outbuildings, interprets rural life on the North Texas prairie between 1890 and 1925. The museum provides tours and programs for 35,000 visitors each year and operates primarily through the support of volunteers.

Docents: Volunteer tour guides undergo 7-8 hours of training on local Plano history, turn-of-the-century Texas history, farm and family life. Docents are costumed and volunteer twice a month for a two hour shift. In addition, docents are requested to attend two (2) mandatory in-service events and docent training as they are scheduled. Docents must be at least 17 years old, pass a criminal background check and make a one-year commitment. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the world and to assist a vital growing organization! For more information, please contact the Heritage Farmstead Museum at 972-881-0140, or email to education, and request an application.

Open Volunteer Days: Volunteer Days are held on the third Saturday of each month and are open to youth, families, scouts, seniors and anyone who is interested in serving the community in a fun and rewarding atmosphere. General housekeeping is done on the grounds and outbuildings of the museum.

Garden: The museum grounds house a kitchen and a children's vegetable garden as well as several flower gardens. Help is always needed with maintaining these beautiful areas of the Farmstead.

Craft Group: The Craft Group meets every Wednesday morning and makes handmade items that are sold in the museum's store. The Craft Group also provides social opportunities and programs four or five times a year. No training necessary. Adults only.

Office Volunteers: Help with answering phones and other general office help is always needed! Hours are flexible Monday-Friday. We will provide all necessary training. Ages 16 and up.

For Heritage Farmstead Museum volunteer opportunities indicate your interests and abilities and e-mail us at acarroll@heritagefarmstead.org or call us at (972) 881-0140.
