Spring EXHIBIT—2008
School bells are ringing and that means the Third Graders in Plano will be visiting the Farmstead. The exhibit in the house interprets Life on the Blackland Prairie and features artifacts that coordinate with their curriculum.
In the Formal Parlor our wonderful homemade quilting frame (with the wooden gears) is set up and ready for a quilting bee, which not only shows how quilts were made but also emphasizes the social aspect of working together.
In the Family Parlor are several examples of photographs by professionals such as the studio cards and pictures made by traveling photographers of farm families and school groups. Amateurs took early snapshots with Kodaks such as those on display.
Music was always a favorite pastime of farm families, so the Music Room has the family’s favorite musical instruments laid out, including a banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and piano. Also on the table in the center of the room is an Edison cylinder phonograph.
The Dining Room table is ready for the family to sit down to a farm breakfast with home cured bacon, eggs from their hens, homemade biscuits with home churned butter and their own sorghum syrup. Quite a contrast to the boxed cereal and Pop Tarts of today.
In the Kitchen they are in the middle of making pickles with cucumbers from the garden. The students learn about early chores such as keeping the wood box filled, gathering eggs, churning butter, and emptying the water tray under the icebox.
Upstairs in the children’s rooms the students compare and contrast the toys of today with those of yesterday.
In the Girl’s Room the toys are miniatures of things they will be using when they grow up such as a little wood stove, an ironing board with a little Sadd iron, a little Bissell sweeper, doll in a bed and an old fashioned stroller.
In the Boys’ Room there are several homemade toys such as a sling shoot, stilts, fishing pole, marble board and homemade radio.
Since the upstairs is shown as in the pre-electricity and pre-indoor plumbing days, the students learn about chamber pots and kerosene lamps in the Family Bedroom.
On the table in the Sewing Room/Teenage Girl’s Room is an exhibit of irons that shows their progression.
The house is also ready for fall with quilts on the beds, fall clothing on display, and fall flowers decorating the rooms.
