IMAGINE the year 1891 as you approach the new home of Hunter and Mary Alice Farrell. The home welcomes you with brilliant color, seven different shades to be exact. The Victorian architecture expresses a desire to IMPRESS, as this home was a gift to the bride to be of Mr. Hunter Farrell. Do you think that Hunter had any idea that the house would stand for over 100 years and WELCOME over 20,000 visitors each year? Indeed it has become a living history museum to teach generations what it was like to live on a farm at the turn of the century. In our continuing effort ENGAGEyoung minds and challenge deep thinking HFM offers all types of educational programming.

BLACKLAND PRAIRIE TOUR (Grades 2nd-5th)
The Blackland Prairie Tour supports curriculum particularly in the areas of Science and Social Studies. The tour is led by volunteer docents and includes the historic Farrell Wilson House as well as the complete 4 acre site. Visitors experience and interpret life on the Blackland Prairie with a series of “hands-on” activities which could include beating rugs, feeding chickens, milking our Incredible Milking Cow, washing clothes, and visiting a turn of the century school house to scrutinize replica artifacts.
FARMER DUCK (Grades pre-K to 3)
The Farmer Duck Tour at the Heritage Farmstead Museum is based on the book, Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell and Helen Oxenbury. We begin the tour reading aloud to the group. We discuss chores; comparing turn-of- the century chores with modern day chores. Children are then provided the unique opportunity to learn about history through hands on activities like feeding chickens, washing dishes, in washtubs and even milking our very own creation, Odessa the teaching cow. Each activity teaches a very important lesson. Call 972-881-0140 to schedule your tour today.
TAG-A-LONG TOM (Grades 1-4)
The Tag-a-long Tom Tour is loosely based on Mark Twain’s, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book recounts the life of young Tom and his friends in a small town along the Mississippi River more than 100 years ago. In the story, Tom, who is about 11 or 12 years old is being raised on a farm in the Midwest by his own Aunt Polly. Visitors tour the Heritage Farmstead Museum with Tom’s playful character in mind. Children experience the HFM as if it were the farm young Tom grew up on with his Aunt Polly. Children learn of all the chores that were expected of them. At the center of each chore is a chance to explore the imagination and have fun at the farm. Visitors will beat rugs, enter the storm cellar, “whitewash” a garden fence, plant seeds, take a walk to the creek and so much more. They will find jump ropes, beanbags, skipping rocks and a pirate ship along the way. Call 972-881-0140 to schedule your tour today.
SARAH PLAIN AND TALL (Grades 3-5)
The Sarah Plain and Tall Tour captures the theme of Patricia MacLachlan’s wonderful story about a widowed Midwestern farmer with two children who places a newspaper ad for a wife. A woman from Maine named Sarah answers the ad and comes to see if they would suit. The widower and his children are worried she will miss her home too much and leave them. In the end Sarah convinces them that while she would always miss her old home, she would miss them more. Visitors experience the HFM as if it were the farm where Caleb and Anna are living somewhere on the Kansas Prairie. Children try charcoal or pencil drawing, see and discuss different modes of transportation, visit the ram barn and learn about farm animals upclose; take a walk down to Pitman Creek; play turn of the century games and visit the replica turn-of-the century school house. Call 972-881-0140 to schedule your tour today.
